Iceni Shortlisted For ‘Community Club of the Year’ at the Active Norfolk Awards

We are very pleased and proud to announce that Norfolk Iceni Basketball Club has been shortlisted for ‘Community Club of the Year’ at the Active Norfolk Awards.

The awards recognise the people and organisations that are helping the people of Norfolk to achieve their best, improve their health and wellbeing through physical activity, and those who are achieving incredible things in sport.

The Community Club of the Year Award recognises a club that has increased participation in the activity, has made a big difference to a community, or made great progress during the year.

Since Doreen formed Norfolk Iceni Basketball Club over 30 years ago, the club has gone from strength to strength, with the past season being are most successful yet. Highlights of our year include the Iceni Saints Ladies Team winning both the Norfolk Ladies Division as well as the Iceni Trophy Competition. Iceni Demons also became the first Iceni team ever to reach the National Basketball League playoffs ranking them in the top 16 teams in the country in the Under 14 age bracket. We have increased the number of teams entered into competitions and each team has made vast improvements and had their best season yet. We have a record number of teams entered into both National League and Local League competitions for this season continuing our development.

Some of our Iceni players have also been selected and are a part of the Basketball England Development Pathway, participating in Aspire sessions every month and some going on to represent the East Region at the England County Tournaments.

We have also increased the overall number of players at the club and have developed and recruited more coaches, referees and table officials. Coach Jo, and Under 16 player Leah were also recognised as ‘Coach of the Year’ and ‘Young Official of the Year’ respectively at the Basketball England East Region Awards. Both were also shortlisted in the finals.

Additionally, we have developed better relationships with local schools and community clubs to overall encourage more girls to participate in basketball. New events and opportunities have also been developed such as the Iceni Basketball Camp Day.

We look forward to continuing to increasing participation and creating more opportunities for girls and women in basketball.
